The SPAR Proteas ladies defended their league title during the Diamond Challenge netball tournament by defeating neighbours Zimbabwe 73-44 at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego on Saturday.

The Proteas dominated the tournament from start to finish, racking up five wins out of five on their way to defending their title.

In their opening match they walloped Namibia 78-28 before seeing off Botswana 58-35. The President’s XII faced off stiff competition against a resilient Zambian outfit to eventually run out 48-46 victors.

Not only did the Proteas win the tournament but they also dominated the individual tournament awards. Captain Bongiwe Msomi was named the overall Player of the Tournament, Rome Dreyer as the Best Centre Court Player and Pumza Maweni as the Best Defender.

This was the ideal preparation for South Africa who will square up for the 2019 Netball Quad Series in January 2019 in England. They will go up against the Australia Diamonds, England Roses and the New Zealand Silver Ferns.

South Africa will also be heading to the Netball World Cup that will be staged in Liverpool, England from the 12th – 21st July 2019.
