PSL Match Report: Orlando Pirates 3-1 SuperSport United: Rampant Bucs Sink Matsatsantsa

Orlando Pirates registered a 3-1 win over hoodoo team SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Buccaneers came out guns blazing and soon found the opener through Vincent Pule in the 15th minute with a diving header inside the box following a teasing cross from Augustine Mulenga.

Bradley Grobler, who had been the much talked-about player leading to the match, had a chance to equalise for the visitors in the 25th minute with a header at the near post but Siyabonga Mpontshane saved his effort.

The Bafana Bafana striker had another opportunity shortly afterwards with a free header from inside the box but again Mpontshane made a brilliant save at the bottom corner.

The home side went into the halftime break leading 1-0, though the visitors ended the first stanza as the stronger side.

Matsatsantsa youngster Teboho Mokoena had a chance to level matters for the Tshwane side in the 63rd minute with a free-kick from just outside the box but he got under the dead ball and his effort sailed over the bar.

Centre-back Bongani Khumalo pulled his side level in the 68th minute with an out-stretched strike at the back post following a superb cross from Aubrey Modiba.

However, second-half substitute Thembinkosi Lorch restored Bucs’ lead for with a sweeping left-footed strike after being set up by Xola Mlambo.

Ben Motshwari then bagged all three points for Pirates three minutes from time, with a rebound after his initial shot was blocked by Ronwen Williams.

Bucs had a chance to make the score 4-1 in stoppage time after Justin Shonga found himself in acres of space with just Williams to beat. The Zambian opted to go for glory instead of passing the ball but Williams came out tops to deny him and restrict the score to 3-1.
