Following the sacking of head coach Giovanni Solinas and his assistant Arthur Zwane on Friday, the club moved swiftly to appoint Ernst Middendorp as the club’s new coach.

Middendorp has been appointed on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The German mentor has previously coached the Soweto giants between 2005 and 2007, winning the SAA Supa8 trophy (now MTN8) and ABSA Cup (now Nedbank Cup) during his first stint.

Club chairman Kaizer Motaung Snr explained the reason behind bringing Middendorp back to the club.

“We were looking for a coach who is experienced and who has an understanding of the club’s footballing culture,” commented Motaung.

“That’s certainly the case with Middendorp‚ who won trophies during his previous stint in charge of Kaizer Chiefs.

“Middendorp also understands South African football well‚ having a vast knowledge and experience of our local football. We are looking forward to working together.”

“We need stability and the coach will start working with the team on Saturday.”

The club is yet to appoint an assistant coach, but MDC coach Arthur Zwane will assist Middendorp for the upcoming three games.
