Gutsy Amajita Restrict Hosts Niger In U20 AFCON Opener

Amajita rallied from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against hosts Niger in their opening Group A fixture of U20 African Cup of Nations at the Stade General Seyni Kountche on Saturday evening.

The first half saw Thabo Senong’s men creating the better of the chances between the two sides but were let down by their finishing in the final third.

Both goals came in the second stanza and it was the hosts that drew first blood in the 64th minute through Boubacar Goumey.

The South Africans did not sit back and made sure Niger’s joy was short-lived as they pulled level on 71 minutes through a thumping header by Siphesihle Mkhize who rose high to head home Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s free-kick.

In the other Group A tie, Nigeria beat Burundi 2-0 to move top of the group while South Africa lies third in the standings.

Amajita next face a daunting task of overcoming the Nigerians in their next match on Tuesday, before they take on the Burundians in their final group match next weekend.
