Gutsy Amajita Restrict Hosts Niger In U20 AFCON Opener

Amajita rallied from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against hosts Niger in their opening Group A fixture of U20 African Cup of Nations at the Stade General Seyni Kountche on Saturday evening.

The first half saw Thabo Senong’s men creating the better of the chances between the two sides but were let down by their finishing in the final third.

Both goals came in the second stanza and it was the hosts that drew first blood in the 64th minute through Boubacar Goumey.

The South Africans did not sit back and made sure Niger’s joy was short-lived as they pulled level on 71 minutes through a thumping header by Siphesihle Mkhize who rose high to head home Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s free-kick.

In the other Group A tie, Nigeria beat Burundi 2-0 to move top of the group while South Africa lies third in the standings.

Amajita next face a daunting task of overcoming the Nigerians in their next match on Tuesday, before they take on the Burundians in their final group match next weekend.

Springboks World Cup Jersey Revealed

The Springboks have revealed their new jersey which they will don at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan in September.

The jersey, which will go on sale in South Africa on Friday, features a unique design which will compliment the playing style and technical requirements of the Boks, according to the jersey manufacturer

Rassie Erasmus’ charges have been pitted against defending champions New Zealand, Italy, Canada and Namibia in Pool B.

The Springboks will open their world cup campaign against the All Blacks on 21 September.

Former Bidvest Wits Player Papy Faty Dies

Former Bidvest Wits midfielder Papy Faty has passed on after collapsing during a match in eSwatini.
The 28-year-old was on the books of Malanti Chiefs at the time of his death during a league fixture against Green Mamba at Killarney Stadium in Pigg’s Peak.

The Burundi international has been in the news for some years now after Wits released him because of a heart condition.

Despite doctors orders advising him to quit the game, Faty carried on playing.

While playing for Real Kings in the National First Division he collapsed during a match which prompted the club to terminate his contract.

Durban To Host 2019 COSAFA Cup

The 2019 COSAFA Cup will be staged in Durban as the Southern Africa-based side’s look to use the competition in order to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt in June.

The 14-team competition, which will also see Afcon-bound sides like South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe and Madagascar take part, will run May 25-June 8.

Matches early in the competition will be played at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi and Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, while the Sugar Ray Xulu and Chatsworth Stadiums will accommodate teams for training purposes.

The majestic Moses Mabhida Stadium will play host to the semi-finals and final matches of the competition.

Zimbabwe will be looking to defend their title once again after beating Zambia 4-2 in Polokwane last year to record their sixth title.
