Banyana Banyana have been nominated for the 2018 South African Sports Awards, following yet another successful year for the South African national women’s team.

The nominees for the awards were announced this morning by Sports Minister Thokozile Xasa on SABC’s Morning Live.

Desiree Ellis’ charges were nominated alongside two rugby franchises, the SA Rugby Sevens team, the Blitzbokke, who were crowned World Sevens Rugby champions for 2018 after beating England 24-14 in Paris, and the Super Rugby side the Lions, who reached the Super 15 cup final for the third year running despite losing all three.

In addition, Banyana also qualified for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to be played in Ghana next month after hammering neighbours Lesotho 7-0 on aggregate.

The cherry on the cake was when they successfully defended their COSAFA Women’s Championship title on home soil after seeing off Cameroon 2-1 in the final.

Ellis’ ladies found the back of the net 12 times in five outings, conceding just a single goal throughout the competition.
