More glory seems to be on the way for Banyana Banyana after they were nominated for three major Confederation of African Football (CAF) awards.
This follows a few days after they qualified for their maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup which is set for France next year, following their 2-0 victory over Mali 2-0 in the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Desiree Ellis’ charges take on old foes Nigeria in the final of the AWCON on Saturday after beating the defending champions 1-0 in the tournament opener.
The 2018 COSAFA Cup champions have been nominated for the Women’s National Team of the Year (an award they currently hold) alongside Cameroon, Ghana, Mali and Nigeria.
Coach Ellis has also made the shortlist for the Women’s National Team Coach of the Year while star striker Thembi Kgatlana and captain have been shortlisted for the Women’s Player of the Year.
Kgatlana has already set the AWCON alight with her impressive displays for the South Africans and is the top goalscorer in the tournament with five goals from four matches, and won three consecutive Women of the Match accolades.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on 8 January 2019 in Dakar, Senegal.
