Defending PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 draw in a league encounter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.
The home side had a chance to take the lead as early as the first minute through Jeremie Brockie after he was through on goal but the New Zealander fluffed his shot before being challenged for the ball by Junior Sibande.
Brockie’s search for his maiden league goal in Sundowns colours continued when on 35 minutes he had another look on goal but again the Kiwi man was denied, this time by Sello Motsepe who popped up just in time to deny him.
With halftime looming, the visitors almost took the lead through Sabelo Nyembe after making his way into the Downs box but he failed to connect his shot on target.
Five minutes into the second half, Brazilian defender Ricardo Nascimento received his marching orders for something he said to the referee.
This forced Pitso Mosimane’s hand in introducing Motjeka Madisha for the ineffective Brockie.
Despite being 10 men down, Sundowns had another chance to take the lead when Wayne Arendse popped up in the 72nd minute with a free header in the box but Sibande made a timeous clearance off the line.
In the final stages, Mosimane handed Toni Silva his debut and also brought on Lyle Lakay, but the Lions of the North held on to claim a valuable point away from home.
