Defending MTN8 champions SuperSport United survived a late onslaught from Orlando Pirates to advance to the semifinals of the Wafa Wafa competition at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.
The home side stamped their authority and went ahead as early as the 14th minute through Augustine Mulenga after a great combination between him and Justin Shonga.
SuperSport put up a great fight despite trailing and saw themselves level when captain Dean Furman played a great one-two with Evans Rusike before firing past Siyabonga Mpontshane with a low left-footed strike.
The Zimbabwean then registered his goal just a few minutes into the second half after been afforded a lot of space inside the box, putting Matsatsantsa 2-1 up.
Milutin Sredojevic’s charges pulled matters level on the hour mark through Gladwin Shitolo, whose deflected shot sneaked in on the near post.
Vincent Pule missed a glorious chance to hand Bucs the win with five minutes to go when the ball fell in his path but the left-winger got under the ball and saw it sail over the bar.
The two sides could not be separated in regular time, with the game going into extra-time.
Pirates were awarded a penalty seven minutes before the end of extra-time after Thamsanqa Gabuza was brought down in the box by Morgan Gould.
Mulenga stepped but his effort was saved by Ronwen Williams.
With the tie ending 2-2, spot kicks eventually decided the game with SuperSport advancing with a 4-3 shootout win.
