English giants Manchester United have landed head coach José Mourinho’s first summer signing with the acquisition of Brazilian midfielder Fred in a five-year deal worth £52m.
The 25-year-old made 37 appearances for Shakhtar, as they went on to lift the Ukraine Premier Liga title this past season.
A statement on the club’s website read:
“Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos.
“A further announcement will be made in due course.”
The Red Devils are reportedly also close to sealing a deal with Porto’s 19-year-old defender Diogo Dalot with a deal set to be completed this week.
Dalot, who is seen as an understudy for robust captain Antonio Valencia, has a £17.4m release clause and is understood to have had his medical at United’s Carrington training facility.
