South African midfielder Leandra Smeda has penned a contract with Lithuanian champions FK Gintra-Universitetas.
This comes shortly after she also signed a representation agreement with LTA Agency, and becomes the first South African to be part of a long list of talented international women’s players around the world to be represented by the agency.
Smeda, 28, makes the move to Lithuania from University of the Western Cape (UWC) ladies where she scooped the Sports Women of the Year title in 2014, a gong she also claimed while in the colours of Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
The experienced Banyana player has amassed 74 caps and scored 19 goals for her national team.
Last year she won the 2017 Cosafa Women’s Championship with South Africa and has also featured in two Olympic Games and three African Women’s Championship tournaments.
Earlier this year, Smeda also took part in the 2018 Cyprus Women’s Cup and scored two goals during the recent African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, a tournament which will be held in Ghana in November this year.
